SIZOS

The Osijek Health Symposium (SIZOS) is a student-led project launched in 2022 with the aim of bringing public health topics closer to students and the wider community.

In its first year, the theme was “Health as the Art of Living,” highlighting the importance of proper nutrition and regular physical activity, while also addressing the most common diseases of our time – cardiovascular and metabolic diseases, as well as various syndromes.

The following year, in October – Breast Cancer Awareness Month – the symposium focused on women’s health. We discussed the importance of this topic, its often neglected role in society, and the challenges related to menopause, infertility, childbirth, and the postpartum period.

In 2024, inspired by frequent questions from students, friends, and acquaintances, we chose the theme “Your Touch, Their Pulse.” This topic explored the most common medical emergencies, how to provide proper first aid, ways to save lives, and the importance of seeking professional help in a timely manner.

In 2025, reflecting the global emphasis on mental health, the symposium was held under the title “Extend a Hand, Give Hope.” Our goal was to raise awareness among students, parents, children, and the wider community about the importance of mental health and the need for open conversations about it.

Each symposium consists of student lectures delivered by students of the J. J. Strossmayer University, complemented by expert talks from leading professionals in the respective fields. Round tables provide the audience with the opportunity to ask questions and exchange ideas with experts, while workshops allow participants to gain practical skills and hands-on experience. The program traditionally concludes with educational and entertaining activities, most often in the form of a quiz and social gathering, combining learning with community building.

Ultimately, guided by the idea that “health is the art of living,” we strive to inspire students and the wider public to embrace health as a holistic, everyday, and enriching part of life.
